Richie Havens was born January 21, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York. A hugely influential American folk rock singer and guitarist, Havens is probably best known for his opening performance at the Woodstock music festival in 1969.

Richie rose to fame in the Greenwich Village music scene of the sixties, along with other greats such as Bob Dylan. Havens released several albums in 1967 with limited success, but after his opening performance at Woodstock he tasted international success and followed up immediately with the release of Alarm Clock the album featuring a popular rendition of George Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun”.

Havens has continued to release albums through to the present day. Although never really a songwriter, Richie remade popular works by other great musicians of the time [notably the Beatles and Bob Dylan] adding his distinctive style to both lyric and rhythm. In 1993 he played for the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.

Richie is a fantastic guitarist, making extensive use of open tunings and an unconventional thumb-fretting style. In 1971 in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, John Lennon said about Richie, “He plays a pretty funky guitar”, and that’s just putting it lightly.

Richie Havens is a folk rock icon, who still keeps busy performing gigs all over the world. Respect!
