Police detain hundreds of rock fans.

According to Reuters news, Iranian police have detained more than 230 rock fans and seized alcohol and drugs in a raid on a "satanic" underground rock concert, state media in the conservative Islamic state reported on Saturday.

Iran, which has launched an annual summer crackdown on "immoral behaviour", bans alcohol, narcotics and parties with unrelated men and women dancing together, drinking and mixing. Western popular music is frowned upon.

Most of the arrested are said to be wealthy young persons, with some of the concert attendees being expatriate Iranians on holiday from the UK and Sweden.

Under Islamic sharia law imposed after the Iranian revolution in 1979, women are compelled to cover their hair and wear long, loose clothing to disguise their figures and protect their modesty, with violators receiving lashes, fines or even imprisonment.
