Edwin Starr is an American soul singer who made it big with “WAR” an anti-Vietnam protest song recorded on the Motown label in 1970. Born in Cleveland Ohio, Starr moved to Detroit in the late 1950s and began his career signed to Ric-Tic records, which was later absorbed by Motown.
Edwin Starr had a long and illustrious career giving us hits such as War, Contact, Stop Her on Sight [SOS] and H.A.P.P.Y Radio among others, he was a regular feature at the famous ‘Twisted Wheel’ Nightclub in Manchester [UK] during his early Motown days and later moved to reside in the UK in 1973. In 1974 he released the title track to the movie “Hell Up in Harlem”.
As a soul musician Edwin Starr helped create the sound of Motown in the early sixties as one of the very first artists to be signed to the Detroit based record label. Since then Starr has recorded with 20th Century Records, Avatar, Calibre and 10 Records.
Edwin Starr sadly left us in 2003 and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered…If there's any fans out there who can contribute with information on Edwin, please use the comments link at the bottom of this post to post your own articles here…Thanks!
